"Take note, take it serious, and take care of it."
A reminder that feelings aren't facts, but you can't ignore them.
Growing up, I was quite a sensitive child.
I took everything seriously–from my schoolwork and extracurricular activities, to what people would say about or to me. And when I was teased, I would often shut down, disconnect, and isolate myself so that I wouldn’t have a public meltdown or cuss folks out from here to Timbuktu.
Today, at the ripe age of 35, I’ve thankfully learned tools that help me better manage my emotions, but sometimes I still let them compound before releasing them.
For example: just this morning, I cried over something work-related (typical Capricorn, amirite?!). It wasn’t direct feedback that brought on the waterworks, but overall frustration that opened the floodgates. It reminded me of two things: first, I can advocate for myself and my time without shrinking or putting myself into a corner. And second, I can’t let the small stuff out of my control get to me.
Someone else’s urgency doesn’t have to be my emergency.
Why am I sharing this? One, because I’m human and openly admitting that I do not always have my sh*t together.
And two, because earlier this week, my dear friend Taj Rani (author of
) shared this video of multi-hyphenate superstar Pharrell Williams dropping BIG WISDOM:“Don’t take it personal; take note and take care of it.”
Since I shared this video in my Instagram stories, I’ve seen countless others post it too, and I can appreciate how everyone resonates with this truth.
So instead of falling into the trap of beating myself up post-tear drops, I made a mental note, offered a solution, and kept it moving.
Keep scrolling for more juice.
Oh! And since next week is a holiday, I’ll be back in your inboxes on July 11.
